CHIEF GARY CARMICHAEL

Chief Gary Carmichael is a native of Adamsville, Alabama, Chief Gary Carmichael has devoted more than three decades to public service and law enforcement with distinction, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to community safety.

He is a proud graduate of Minor High School, Class of 1988, where he earned All-Metro Football honors, showcasing his talent and leadership on the field. His athletic and academic accomplishments earned him a football scholarship to Alabama A&M University.

Chief Carmichael began his law enforcement career in 1992 with the City of Adamsville, where he served as a patrolman, D.A.R.E. officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. In 1999, he joined the Bessemer Police Department, where his roles included patrolman, detective, community service supervisor, patrol supervisor, and patrol commander.

In 2007, his exceptional investigative work led to a breakthrough confession that solved 16 downtown Bessemer burglaries, earning him the titles of Officer of the Year from both the Bessemer Area Chamber of Commerce and the Alabama Retail Association.

Chief Carmichael is a lifelong learner. He graduated from Jefferson State Community College and earned his Bachelor’s degree from Faulkner University in 2006. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at Amberton University. He is also a graduate of the University of Alabama Police Academy (Session 106), a certified criminal investigator, and a recipient of the FBI LEEDA Trilogy Award, a mark of his advanced training in law enforcement leadership.

Promoted through the ranks of sergeant, lieutenant, and captain, Chief Carmichael has proudly served the Marvelous City of Bessemer for 26 years with professionalism and honor.

He is married to his beloved wife, Linda Carmichael, and is the proud father of Dr. Kiara Carmichael and Kayla Carmichael, a doctoral student at Vanderbilt University. Chief Carmichael is also a dedicated member of Living Stone Temple, where he continues to live out his faith and service to others.
